The London Group goes virtual

“I looked at how we as a group could continue with our own shows and give artists something to work towards”.

Darren Nisbett LG gives the lowdown on our new online Group exhibition space.

It was a few weeks into lockdown and I had been finding it difficult to be creative, I had lost motivation and had an exhibition that I was working on cancelled. I needed something to work towards and saw the other online exhibitions that were popping up, so I looked at how we as a group could continue with our own shows and give artists something to work towards.

I built the exhibition gallery with a few things in mind. I wanted to try and replicate some of the curation in traditional galleries by introducing walls where work could be organised alongside each other rather than the work ordered by name or by title. Each wall could hold 3 works that worked together or against each other.

London Group exhibitions are very social events especially around private views and artist talks so I wanted to try and keep that side of things as well. Both exhibitions had talks which gave artists a chance to get together and chat about art, which I found really interesting and inspiring

There have been two online exhibitions so far.

The first, “Isolation”, which I curated, asked artists to react to the initial lockdown and how they felt it was impacting their work, what they were thinking. It was a relief to find that I wasn’t the only one struggling with motivation during the time at home.
