RA Summer Exhibition 2023

Congratulations to all The London Group members who are exhibiting this year.

The first Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy took place in 1769.  It has been held every year since then without exception and is the longest continuously staged exhibition of contemporary art in the world.

This year’s Summer Exhibition was co-ordinated by David Remfry RA.  His chosen theme, Only Connect, is a famous quotation from E.M. Forster’s 1910 novel, Howards End.

Fragments of ‘EMPIRE’ Charlotte C Mortensson
“I took the photograph, Fragments of ‘EMPIRE’, in Trench Town Jamaica earlier this year.  The Pepsi advert is on the side of an old industrial fridge used in the construction of a yard wall. The scene kept drawing me back – the juxtaposition of the symbol of Western culture with the recycled corrugated metal, which remains one of Trench Town’s most used building materials.  Capital letters in blue across the metal sheets form part of the work ‘EMPIRE’.  Then there is the luscious vegetation enveloping everything…” Charlotte C Mortensson
