Susan Skingle
The English language is liberally sprinkled with weather-related metaphors and sayings, such as ‘every cloud has a silver lining’, ‘lightning never strikes twice in the same place’. Britain’s changeable weather is a favourite topic of conversation and can profoundly affect one’s mood. My recent sculptures play on the analogies that can be made between climatic and emotional states. I have constructed ‘examples’ of weather which are displayed in glass containers, like specimens in a museum. The ephemeral subject matter is modelled using materials which are chosen for their ability to mimic climatic conditions. There are cotton wool clouds, wire wool becomes an abrasive tornado, windscreen glass becomes ice. |
