Albert Irvin RA
I first showed in the London Group while I was still a student at Goldsmiths just after the war. When I left art school in 1950, the London Group's annual send in show was my only platform, as it was for many artists. I became a member in 1965. Work was at that time submitted to the Slade for election. Sainsburys provided financial support and supplied the administrative superstructure, which they'd been encouraged to embark upon in the 1930's by the young Henry Moore. Shows were varied and lively and reflected the current climate of ideas, although internecine skirmishing lingered between core elements of Bombergians and London Roaders. Problems arose when the next generation of Sainsburys withdrew their support and left the London Group to fend for itself. I have a great affection for the London Group and within the upheavals of a completely changed world; I would wish to see it flourish for a younger generation as effectively as it did for mine. ---------------------------- link to Albert Irvin's webpage at Royal Academy |
