Mark Dickens
Icons have become part of today’s decorative background with no more importance than say a pattern on garden railings. They are still very much part of our everyday lives and compete with patterns to form our contemporary symbolism. The icons and patterns in my work shape this strong relationship. The perception of such imagery is involuntary: we recognise it without stopping to examine its relevance in our lives. Universal painted symbols such as winged figures and flowers, in my work, together with printed patterns in repetition create a multi-layered range of focus. The decorative and figurative elements play on our notion of familiarity. |
