Julian Cooper
Julian Cooper

Julian Cooper is a painter of the landscape and the figure, a picture-maker who continues to explore and map the complex relationship between figure and ground. A tyro lakeland landscape painter with modernist leanings, he went to art school in London eager to imbibe the progressive spirit of mid Sixties abstraction. Subsequently, the narrative of his career has been distinguished by a dialogue between abstract picture values and the need to paint landscape and people in a figurative manner. That dialogue has fecundated Cooper’s art, and the tensions and resolutions arising from it have resulted in images of increasing assurance and real power.
