Anne Cloudsley
Many of my paintings, drawings and lithographs depict the multifarious processes of nature - their origins, growth and ultimate decay. I was inspired by the landscapes of Machu Picchu, and of Chan Chan in the Peruvian desert where scattered trees compete with the crumbling walls of the largest adobe city of the ancient world. Old Meroitic temples in the Sudan rise phoenix-like from the arid sands. The seductive shapes of the mosques of Bobo Dioulasso and Mopti in Western Africa testify to the passing centuries and excite the artistic imagination. Fascination with the growth of vegetation led me to exploit these ideas in abstract patterns, but my attention has recently returned to Quiver Trees and the sculptural patterns of their branches. |
