Philippa Beale
Many London Group Members belonged to a post World War 2 heroic white male painting genre. This work often appeared obscure and apart from its good looks had no particular message. My generation sought to engage our audience, maintaining a look or style was unimportant. Unlike our predecessors, we were not preoccupied with the problems of form; our quest was for a felicitous objectification. Changing the frame of reference for everyday objects or events has an indirect lyric expression for me. I use symbols and metaphor and cross the boundaries between advertising and fine art to encourage interpretation. I document 'life' against the passage of time as would an archaeologist or pathologist and have deconstructed female desire and family politics in such early works as 'Rough and Smooth' and 'Baby Love '. My work has been exhibited widely, at the Akumulatrie 2 Gallery in Poland; Angela Flower's Gallery, Richard Demarco in Edinburgh, and the GMI video screen in Leicester Square and on billboards in the Old Kent Road. Recent work is more evocative and mysterious but continues to challenge the 'status quo'. |
