Victoria Arney
Victoria’s work deals with that tricky subject matter -- children. In the most recent work she has been looking at complex narrative painting - scenes of great human drama, historical, over worked and baroque. The physicality that children express through their play inside and outside is almost like the formulized dramas of Poussin , Reubens, Manet, Goya, - fighting, playing dead, posing, uninhibited with their bodies or gestures –copy cats of raw emotion. It is the formal play of figures and the unspoken narrative they suggest that I am trying to look at in my paintings and works on paper. Victoria studied The Slade and then went on to become a Cheltenham Fellow in 1992/3. In 1992 she won the prestigious East painting Prize and has exhibited widely in London and at various venues outside of the capital, including the Pitt Rivers Museum Oxford and the Hatton Gallery Newcastle – more recently she showed at The Jerwood Drawing Prize in 2002 and The Chichester 2009 open selected by Gavin Turk.
